The Language performance test according to STANAG 6001 is a proficiency exam. It is based on the descriptors given in NATO Standardization Agreement 6001 and tests the communicative competence of candidates in a foreign language. The test is not based on any given study materials, curriculum or syllabus and therefore it does not disadvantage any particular group of candidates. The whole exam is carried out without the use of dictionaries, grammar or any other language aids. It is assumed that candidates at a higher level are also competent in the skills required at a lower level. Vocabulary range and the topic areas appropriate for different levels are simply suggestions and should not be seen as fixed and invariable.
